Safety First

- As a user of prescription medicines, you need to make sure you are well informed about the medicines you are taking. Be a smart consumer. Know as much as you can about the medications prescribed to you. Know the dosage amounts you are taking and how often you should take each prescription.
- If the strength of the medication changes or you are given a new prescription, make sure your doctor and pharmacist know about every prescription you are taking. It's easy to avoid problems that could result from drug interaction if you talk first with your pharmacist.
- Ask questions about your prescription. If you have symptoms after you start taking a new medicine, tell your doctor or pharmacist right away.
- Medicines should be stored in a cool, dry place. Because bathrooms are often warm and wet, they are usually a terrible place to store prescription drugs. Bedroom dressers make much more sense. And if you live with children or if they visit, make sure your medicines are out of reach and that the child safety cap is secure.
- Look to reliable sources of information such as the National Institute of Medicine, or the National Council on Patient Information and Education.
